Dr. Cynthia Opheim is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and served as University Associate Provost. She received her B.A. in government from Angelo State University and her M.A. in political science from Texas Tech. She also earned her Ph.D. in government from The University of Texas. Dr. Opheim has been with Texas State since 1987 and has put in a considerable amount of time teaching at Angelo State, The University of Texas and the San Angelo School District. Here at Texas State, she has taught a variety of junior level and graduate level courses with her specialties being the legislative process, political parties, and American state politics. In her career, she has been recognized for excellence in teaching by Alpha Delta Pi in 2006, by Golden Key National Honor Society in 1996 and by the San Angelo Student Association in 1984 and 1985. In the Department of Political Science, Dr. Opheim served as department chair from 1996-2003 as well as faculty advisor for the Political Science Teaching Certification program from 1988-2003 among many other appointments and positions. She has been an integral asset of every community she has been a part of serving San Marcos in the League of Women’s Voters from 2000-2005 and as a Moderator or Panelist for Political Discussion Panels or Candidate Forums.
